Rangers are set to return for ex-Manchester City striker Tyrese Campbell as his contract ticks down at Stoke City.

The Gers were strongly linked with a move for the hitman back in January 2020 during the reign of former manager Steven Gerrard.

Rangers had already struck deals to bring the likes of Joe Aribo (Charlton) and Calvin Bassey (Leicester City) north of the border with Tyrese Campbell at one stage expected to follow suit.

But after a deal collapsed – Campbell signing a four-year deal at Stoke City instead – reports are claiming that Rangers are mulling over a return for the now 24-year-old.

Rangers revive Tyrese Campbell interest

Football Insider and Wayne Veysey are claiming that the Ibrox side have “revived their interest” in Tyrese Campbell as his contract ticks down at the Potters.

Having scored only one Championship goal this season, things haven’t exactly gone to plan over the last four-years at Stoke between injury and a lack of form at the Britannia.

A hip injury has impacted Tyrese Campbell’s campaign to date and it’ll be raising a few red flags amongst Rangers supporters desperate to move away from signing players with big injury histories.

Interestingly, the report also claims that Hellas Verona failed in a January bid to sign the striker from Stoke, having a £1m offer turned down with the English side fighting for their Championship lives.

Stoke striker almost joined Gers

Tyrese Campbell has also previously claimed that he came close to joining Rangers before signing the contract with Stoke.

In comments made back in 2022, the forward claimed a move looked like it was “going to happen” before he got assurances of gametime from ex-manager Michael O’Neill in the Championship.

“Yeah, there were a couple of points where a move was going to happen,” said Tyrese Campbell.

“This was only really when I wasn’t really playing at Stoke, before I signed my new deal. I was 19, turning 20 – I needed to play football.

“It was just one of those things where – nothing against the club or manager or players, anything like that – just me needing to play.

“It was literally just that but the manager at Stoke, Michael O’Neill sat me down at the time and said ‘what’s going on?’.

“I said I’ve got nothing against the club I just need to play. He said, ‘if I pick you, are you going to play?’ and I said yeah, of course. I’m not going to not play. I don’t want to leave. I’m happy here. Played those games over Christmas and then went from there.”

The son of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, in 153 games for Stoke left-sided forward Tyrese has scored 34 goals.

Campbell has been with Stoke since 2017, the club having been ordered to pay Manchester City £1.75m after securing the striker’s services as a teenager.
