The Scottish Sun reports that Rangers are about to launch a final attempt to sign George Edmundson.
The Gers are said to have been after the Oldham Athletic defender for some time, now.

So far, they have been frustrated by the Latics who have held out for a higher transfer fee with multiple parties interested.
However, they reportedly accepted a bid from Portsmouth for £600k this week [Scottish Sun]. That’s £100,000 more than the last offer understood to have been made by Rangers.

It was previously thought that £500k was the club’s final offer. Now, though, it’s claimed they are willing to stretch in an attempt to secure Edmundson.
Time is of the essence and Rangers are set to make their offer by Friday, when the player returns from holiday to assess his options and to consult with his family. It’s suggested that bid could even be lodged in the next 24 hours.

Verdict

A final offer makes sense from Rangers’ point of view.
They now know exactly what Oldham are after and it’s no longer a game of cat and mouse. An offer of £600k will give them the chance to enter talks with Edmundson.
For a player Gerrard clearly admires, an extra £100k isn’t a huge ask. Especially considering the club paid around £2m [Sky Sports] for the similarly inexperienced but promising Nikola Katic last summer.
Securing at least one new centre-back, quickly, has to be a priority. Especially given the current lack of depth in that area.
