Rangers look set to narrowly miss out on a share of Fulham’s move for Ajax defender Calvin Bassey as the centre-back closes in on a switch to the Premier League.

According to widespread reports – including this one here in the Guardian – Ajax look set to recoup £18m on Calvin Bassey one year on from when the Nigerian international left Rangers for Amsterdam.

After a challenging season with the Eredivisie side, whose summer rebuild last season didn’t exactly go to plan, the centre-back looks set to return to the UK.

And whilst there will be plenty of Rangers fans looking forward to seeing Calvin Bassey’s beaming smile on Match of the Day, the club will miss out on a two-fold potential windfall on the centre-back.

Rangers to miss out on Calvin Bassey to Fulham windfall

Fulham-bound Calvin Bassey broke the Rangers transfer record when he signed a reported £19m rising to £23m deal with Ajax last season.

Whilst Rangers do stand to bank a cool £19m on the player – who broke through at Rangers after being signed from Leicester City in 2020 – the club will miss out on the portion of £4m add-ons which Bassey didn’t reach in the Netherlands.

Given Calvin Bassey is also set to move to Fulham for £1m less than what Ajax paid for him, Rangers will also miss out on any percentage of profit on the deal.

Rangers reportedly inserted a 10% clause into the move, such was the expectation surrounding the centre-back, but as things have transpired Calvin Bassey moves sideways from Amsterdam to London.

Whilst Rangers won’t stand to bank any more money off the Bassey deal – at least in terms of contractual add-ons – there can be no denying the move was a sensational one for the Ibrox club.

Signed for a reported £230k from Leicester City – a development fee at the end of the player’s contract – Rangers made a substantial profit on the defender.

Not only that, but the Fulham-bound centre-back played a key role in 55, the Scottish Cup victory and the run to the Europa League Final, with Calvin Bassey still a very popular name around Ibrox.
