Rangers look set to release former Chelsea youth Alex Kpakpe this summer despite only handing the defender a contract in early January.

According to the Daily Record, Alex Kpakpe is one of several youth and B team Rangers players who are set to be released from their contracts in the coming weeks.

The 19-year-old left-back is set to be joined by Charlie Lindsay, Lewis Mackinnon, Tony Weston, Kelsey Ewen, Harley Ewen and Kevin Ciubotaru in leaving the club at the end of the season.

That’s quite a range of talent there supposedly leaving the club and, if Rangers don’t feel they can make the grade at Ibrox, it is best if the club moves them on.

But in the case of Kpakpe, there is genuine frustration as the former Chelsea youth was once considered among the brightest prospects in English football.

Injuries have had a big impact on the player’s career and Kpapke was offered a six-month chance by Rangers when he signed a contract at the beginning of January.

However, for whatever reason, things haven’t gone to plan for the player and, if the Daily Record have things right, he is moving on to pastures new come the summer.

Upon signing for Rangers, Kpakpe expressed his delight on social media. But now he looks set to move on in the coming months.

“I’m finally happy to announce my signing at this huge club Rangers FC,” tweeted Kpakpe.

“First and foremost I would like to say a massive thank you Chelsea FC for the past 5 years from going grass roots to an academy this club have given me a lot of memories I will never forget it’s been pleasure.”

All seven of the names involved will now look to their own personal futures but – for the time being at least – they will seemingly not be playing their football at Rangers.
