Rangers star Ianis Hagi could make a shock move to VfL Bochum this summer with negotiations underway between the two clubs, according to Sport.ro.
Hagi joined the Gers on an initial six-month loan deal from Genk in January 2020 before a permanent switch last summer for a fee in the region of £3m [Glasgow Times].
Since then, he’s contributed seven goals and 13 assists in all competitions, justifying the club’s relatively substantial spend.
He’s under contract until 2024 but there’s still been plenty of speculation about his future, with Lazio and Sevilla [Fichajes] both linked with interest.
Sport.ro now claims that another club has entered the race, in VfL Bochum.
They are currently playing the second-tier of German football but look set to gain promotion to the Bundesliga as they are top of the table with just three fixtures remaining in the season.
If they do go up, they will reportedly attempt to bring in Hagi as a statement of intent ahead of their first campaign back in the top flight.
No specifics are provided regarding what they would be willing to offer, but it’s asserted that negotiations are underway.
A previous Sport.ro report claimed that Lazio would go to €13m (£11m) to sign Hagi, so it would likely take a big bid from Bochum for their alleged interest to be treated seriously.
Hagi played an important role in 55 and given that he’s still only 22, he’s not yet the finished article, so Rangers may want to hold onto him for a while longer before they consider selling.
However, he hasn’t been a guaranteed starter for Steven Gerrard and if the Gers do need to sell some assets this summer, cashing in on Hagi may be preferable to losing a player like Ryan Kent.
