Rangers star Filip Helander has admitted that he one day longs for a return to Sweden and Malmo FF – but that right now is not the time.

Speaking as the big Swedish defender enters the final year of his contract at Ibrox, the Gers will either need to sign Helander up or ship him out in the summer.

If they don’t do either, then the club risk losing out on the £3m reportedly spent to bring ex-Malmo star Filip Helander to Glasgow in 2019.

Rangers signed the defender from Serie A club Bologna and the Swedish international has gone on to leave an impression at the club but has not been without his injury problems.

Starting his career in Sweden with Malmo – coincidentally his hometown club – the defender left Swedish shores for Italy and Verona in 2015.

Moving to Bologna only a year later, after four years in Italy in total Big Fil headed to Scotland and at 28 the defender now faces a major dilemma regarding his future.

Currently with the Swedish national team as he continues his fightback from knee surgery earlier in the season, Filip Helander has admitted that he sees a return to Malmo at some point in his career.

However, at this current juncture the Swedish international believes a homecoming transfer is “too early” even if it would be “fun”.

“I think it’s too early, that’s how I think today. Then you never know what will happen,” said Helander [Expressen].

“’Ponne’ (Pontus Jansson) always talks about it and of course I hope to play for Malmö one day again. We will see when it happens, but when that day comes it will be very fun.”

Ex-Malmo star Filip Helander has been in the press already this week and admits that a decision taken at Rangers has left him “very sad”.
