Rangers fans may be left bitterly disappointed as favourite Ibrox target Joey Veerman reportedly closes in on a move Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.
The talented 23-year-old midfielder was extensively linked to a £7m Rangers move in the summer [Glasgow Times] but after the club’s Champions League capitulation the interest never materialised.
After a bright showing in the first half of the Dutch top flight season, many Rangers fans had wondered if the club would return for Veerman as the January window opened.
But reports coming out the Netherlands – and confirmation from the Heerenveen directorate – suggest the midfielder is set to make a switch across the country rather than out of it.
Feyenoord were said to have an initial bid rejected last week after Heerenveen sporting director Ferry de Haan had confirmed the Rotterdam club’s interest.
But now the momentum appears to be swaying towards PSV instead as reports in the Netherlands suggest Joey Veerman could be headed to the Phillips Stadion.
PSV, Feyenoord and AZ all in for Rangers-linked Joey Veerman
It’ll have plenty of Rangers fans believing that the dream of bringing the Dutch midfielder could be dead as his Heerenveen form turns heads in the Netherlands.
Rangers may well have hoped their Dutch backroom team could prove a lure for young talent from the Netherlands but it remains unclear if the Gers still harbour ambitions to sign the Heerenveen star.
Not that Rangers aren’t without money after the club confirmed the “club-record” sale of Nathan Patterson to Premier League Everton.
The deal – said to be worth up to £16m – also highlights just how good one of the Ibrox side’s most criminally underrated players really is.
