Rangers secret weapon should be used for Reiss Nelson

If Michael Beale wants to get Rangers fans excited for next season, a shock move for Reiss Nelson wouldn’t go amiss.

A player of this sort of quality would normally be out of the question but, in Neil Banfield, Rangers have a secret weapon to persuade Reiss Nelson to head north after rejecting a contract offer from Arsenal, as reported by Talksport.

The Arsenal winger has hardly kicked a ball this season but has still managed three goals and three assists for his 500 minutes.

The 23-year old Arsenal academy product has spent time on loan at Feyenoord and Hoffenheim and has 64 appearances in total for the club, mainly off the bench.

With his contract running out in the summer though, the England Under-21 international has a decision to make.

Banfield was the man who oversaw Nelson’s promotion from the academy to the first team and moving to Rangers under Michael Beale would see him go from being on the fringes to the main man.

Is Reiss Nelson a realistic option for Rangers?

Currently on £38,000 per week, wages would be the obvious issue, as it always is shopping in England, but a player of Nelson’s quality would deserve to be one of our higher earners.

Also, without a transfer fee, the money it would normally take to sign this type of player could be spread out over his contract.

Nelson has, reportedly, rejected Arsenal’s contract offer which puts potential suitors in a strong position.

Clubs like Fulham, Aston Villa and West Ham have been linked, all of which could offer a much bigger wage packet but Rangers have beaten off Premier League opposition before, and as recently as Nicolas Raskin.

Capable of playing on either wing, Nelson is naturally right footed and will be looking for a club where he is valued and can show off his talents.

There is no reason why, with Banfield’s connection to the youngster, that Nelson couldn’t get that platform at Rangers where Champions League football is still a possibility.

Rangers fans needed something to cheer about this summer, budget signings and project players won’t be enough and a blockbuster signing like Reiss Nelson would give them, and the club as a whole, a real lift.
