As Rangers ran out 2-0 winners over St Johnstone at Ibrox, when Borna Barisic went off some may well have believed Jack Simpson could be making his first appearance under GVB.

The English centre-half, 24, was named on the bench for the victory over the Perthshire club having yet to make an appearance for the Dutch management staff.

But when Barisic went off – prompting fears of injury problems which were later allayed – it was Nathan Patterson who the bench called upon at Ibrox.

Whilst Patterson has been used at left-back before, the youngster is obviously more orthodox on the other side of pitch whilst Calvin Bassey was available at centre-back.

By taking Jack Simpson on, van Bronckhorst could’ve shuffled the on form Bassey out to the left and let the Englishman take up a spot in the middle of the defence.

But instead Rangers opted for Patterson in an ominous decision which comes at a time when Jack Simpson is being linked with the exit door.

Jack Simpson not getting the minutes he needs at Rangers

The ex-Bournemouth defender – who has experience playing in the Premier League – has been scarcely seen this season and not at all under van Bronckhorst.

The match against St Johnstone was the first time Jack Simpson was included in the Ibrox squad under the Dutchman and the opportunity to include him wasn’t taken by the coaching staff.

Signed last January on a pre-contract and then on loan, Jack Simpson hasn’t managed to make the impact he would’ve liked and finds himself firmly on the fringes of the squad.

There’s been much talk about English Championship interest – with QPR, Middlesbrough and Swansea all linked – and the defender’s time appears to be nearing an end.

But it’s not just for Rangers’ sake – the choice regarding that substitution proves that Jack Simpson will probably need to go elsewhere to get minutes at a vital juncture of his career.

Rangers fans certainly enjoyed the win over the Saints with one moment in particular catching the eye of supporters.
