Rangers rumours legitimised as report makes £6m international claim

Rumours linking with a move for Belgian-born Congo international and KRC Genk winger Theo Bongonda have been legitimised in Belgium.

News spread online earlier in the week that Rangers were potentially interested in the 26-year-old left-footed, free-scoring winger as they look to bolster their squad this season.

The claims took on extra weight given that Theo Bongonda currently plies his trade in the Belgian Pro League, a market that Rangers have used regularly under the tenure of Ross Wilson.

But whilst it was all online forum and social media talk back then, a report coming out of the continent has claimed that Rangers are legitimately interested in the winger.

Citing “Scottish sources” Belgian outlet Foot News claim there is interest in Theo Bongonda at Ibrox.

The report also claims that despite the player being in the final year of his contract, Rangers are also considering spending between £5.1m and £6.8m on the player.

Theo Bongonda cost KRC Genk £6m when he joined the club from Belgian rivals Zulte Waregem three seasons ago.

The report also claims that Genk would be delighted to recoup much of this fee with a transfer for the player – we bet they would – whilst there is also interest from UAE.

Unsurprisingly, three-times capped Congo winger Theo Bongonda would rather spend the peak years of his career with a “top European club”.

As we discussed earlier in the week, there is plenty to like about this link.

Theo Bongonda – who has also had spells in Spain with Celta and Turkey with Trabzonspor – netted 14 times in the 18/19 season to convince Genk to initially part with their money.

Since then, the winger has gone on to bag 36 goals and 20 assists in 111 games for the club, with Bongonda netting 13 goals last season alone.

It’s one to watch and Rangers fans will be hoping a rather stagnate transfer window kicks into life in the coming weeks as the club prepare for another season at Ibrox.

One move is reportedly nearing completion as an international target prepares to jet into Scotland with a view to a having a medical.
