Dean Smith, manager of Aston Villa, delivered a big boost to Rangers fans this afternoon.
In a press conference followed by the club’s Twitter account, he confirmed that the Premier League newcomers wouldn’t be bringing any more players in before the transfer deadline.

That’s relevant to the Gers, considering skipper, James Tavernier, has been linked with a Villa Park switch.
Last month, 90min.com reported that Villa, Brighton and Newcastle were interested in the 27-year-old.

Earlier this week, Football Insider also claimed Tav could be the final piece of the puzzle in terms of the Villans’ spending spree.

Yet, it seems the threat of losing the captain, to the Birmingham-based club at least, is now over.
“No there won’t be [any more signings], I think we’re pretty much done”, said Smith. “We’re happy with the signings that we’ve brought in, the recruitment policy that we adopted.”
“We’re very lucky with the owners that we have and the money they’ve put forward…we’ve worked very hard together and I feel very happy with the squad we’ve assembled.”

Verdict

With the transfer deadline for top-flight and Championship clubs in England fast approaching, it looks increasingly likely that Rangers will hold onto Tav full stop.
That’s fantastic news for Steven Gerrard and Bears alike.
The skipper is an integral part of the starting XI, who, with 57, made more appearances than anyone else last season.
He had an outstanding campaign, improving defensively and contributing to 28 league goals.
