Rangers have received a boost after Qatari club Al-Duhail were timed out of a move for key striker Alfredo Morelos.
The Daily Record reported earlier this month that the reigning Qatar Stars League champions were considering swooping for Morelos.
It was claimed that an initial £13m approach from the club had been turned down during the summer, around the same time that Lille appeared to be close to securing his signature [Sky Sports].
The French side looked elsewhere in the end but the Record report suggested that Al-Duhail – who had the benefit of an extended transfer window – were still interested.
Qatari sides only had up until Sunday 25 October to sign players, though, so it can now be confirmed that Morelos won’t be joining the Doha-based club.
The MLS is the only remaining league of note in which clubs can still pick up new signings, given that Portugal’s window also closed over the weekend.
It’s hard to say how serious Al-Duhail’s interest was at any point, but it’s now safe to assert that Morelos will remain at Rangers at least until January.
El Bufalo is under contract until 2023, so the Gers have the upper hand in transfer negotiations and are likely to stick to their £20m asking price when clubs are permitted to approach again in a few months time.
For now, the 24-year-old must get his head down and get back to producing the goods on the pitch.
His role within the team has evolved slightly this season and Rangers are playing well, but there’s no doubt he’s been off-colour in front of goal and he will be looking to end his current mini-drought as soon as possible.
