A Daily Record report has claimed that two Rangers first-team players could be sent out on loan in January.

Steven Gerrard has suggested that the winter window will be more about downsizing rather than bringing players in and it’s claimed that one of Ross Wilson’s first jobs as Director of Football will be to help to trim the first-team squad.

The two players cited as being in danger of being sent away, are Greg Docherty and Matt Polster.

The 23-year-old central midfielder was already at Ibrox before Gerrard arrived and he is yet to feature in a league match under him.

Told to go away and prove himself, he spent last season in EFL League One with Shrewsbury Town and excelled.

Yet, while he earned five early-season appearances in Europa League qualifying and in the League Cup, he’s struggled to make matchday squads ever since.

Seemingly behind Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and Andy King in the pecking order, it’s hard to see a route into the side for him.

Therefore, another loan move with a view to a permanent departure may be his best option.

Matt Polster

The versatile USA international joined Rangers back in January, but it would be fair to say we still don’t really have a full idea of what he has to offer.

The 26-year-old can be deployed in midfield, but given the strength in depth in that area, that’s not a viable way into the side.

Therefore, his chances hinge on getting into the team at right-back.

The skipper, James Tavernier, is in poor form but continues to be a near ever-present in that area. Furthermore, Jon Flanagan’s return to fitness effectively leaves Polster as third choice for the berth.

Although it might leave Rangers a little short on cover, perhaps a loan move would be beneficial with regular game time giving the ex-Chicago Fire star the chance to show what he can do.
