Rangers player trading progress as Scotland international pair team up in Spain

There’s been a lot made about Rangers’ shifting transfer intentions this summer.

The Ibrox support have grown tired of seeing the same old faces fail to grab their opportunity at the club and change for many is long overdue.

Rangers quite simply cannot be comfortable in second place and change will always come in the wake of domestic disappointment.

But the club’s supporters promise much more patience to a squad full of fresh blood rather than one stuffed with those who’ve blinked for a final time when the going’s got tough in the Scottish Premiership title race.

As part of that, the club have promised to change transfer tact with a greater focus on signing young talent with emerging profiles and selling them on for big profits.

It means the club is actively moving away from a model where Rangers spend big wages on Championship players who have consistently underperformed.

For that reason, the fact that two Scotland internationals who’ve been linked to Rangers this summer have wound up in Spain should be celebrated at Ibrox.

Rangers-linked Scotland stars move to Spain

Rangers have been actively trying to improve the left-hand side of their central defence all summer long.

As part of that, free agent Scott McKenna has been routinely linked to Ibrox.

The known Celtic fan and ex-Aberdeen defender had been released at the end of his contract with Premier League Nottingham Forest and is never too far away from links back to Scotland.

But as things have transpired, the centre-back has moved to Las Palmas in La Liga and potentially becomes the club’s highest earner.

That’s because leading Rangers fan media outlet Heart & Hand – in response to a tweet from journalist Jonny McFarlane – claims that the defender was demanding £35k per week.

Scott McKenna will join another Rangers-linked Scotland international in Spain too.

Oliver McBurnie had claimed he’d ’hoped’ to join Rangers after his release from Sheffield United but was announced at Las Palmas in July.

Whilst the bluenose striker’s wage demands are unclear, Salary Sport claim the hitman was on a £24k per week at Bramall Lane.

Rangers must box clever in transfer market

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has made no bones about the need for experience this summer.

The Belgian gaffer, alongside Director of Recruitment Nils Koppen, have sought to sign a number of young players some of whom will be slowly blooded into the Ibrox first-team.

Others – such as Connor Barron – will be expected to grab the opportunity afforded them straight away.

But whilst the Aberdeen midfielder exemplifies the kind of profile Rangers are looking to build upon, there is a lack of experience in the squad which is yet to be plugged.

Moves for the likes of Robin Pröpper certainly represent much more clever deals than those for McKenna or McBurnie.

With Rangers avoiding the guts of £60k per week in wages, we reckon it’s a positive sign that we’ve not splurged to bring them to Ibrox.
