Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb are reportedly weighing up a temporary move for Rangers defender Nikola Katic.

Katic missed the entirety of the 2020/21 season due to a serious knee injury and is yet to feature in a competitive senior fixture in the current campaign, despite making a comeback in pre-season and turning out in a B team match earlier this month.

Now, Sportske Novosti reports via the Daily Record that a return to Croatia could be on the cards.

It’s asserted that Croatian First League champions Dinamo Zagreb are currently weighing up a loan move and that Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson will discuss whether or not it’s a suitable destination in terms of his chances of playing regularly.

Serie A club Spezia were also linked with interest in Katic earlier in the window but it’s claimed that they have since strengthened sufficiently at the back.

Croatian champions consider Katic swoop

It’s important that Katic heads out on loan in order to give him a realistic shot at reestablishing himself at Rangers in the future and with just a few days remaining in the transfer window, the clock is certainly ticking.

A move to a big club like Dinamo, who will be playing Europa League football following their shock Champions League qualifying exit at the hands of Sheriff Tiraspol, could be beneficial as there will be high expectations to perform.

However, there would be little point in sanctioning such a switch if Katic was likely to be third or fourth choice centre-back.

If that was expected to be the case, a move to a less prominent club in a higher quality league would be preferable.

Meanwhile, a rival Premiership club have reportedly enquired about bringing a towering former Rangers defender back to Scotland.
