Leading Rangers fan media and club partner Heart & Hand have quelled reports that veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor is set to sign a new deal.

The 40-year-old stopper’s contract expires come the end of the season and club legend McGregor has endured an up and down campaign with the Light Blues.

All the sounds suggested that this might be the campaign he bows out – the Europa League Final perhaps an apt opportunity to do so in style – with much of the coverage surrounding who will fill the goalkeeping chasm he leaves behind if he retires in the summer.

However, Rangers fans were interested to read via Football Insider that the Gers are closing in on a new deal for the stopper.

The online outlet claimed that “negotiations are progressing well and it is expected that a deal will now be done imminently”.

Very interesting, indeed.

Heart & Hand rebuff Rangers Allan McGregor contract claims

But Heart & Hand and namely host David Edgar quickly moved to dispel these claims by suggesting that whilst anything can change, all the sounds suggest Allan McGregor could be hanging up his gloves come the end of the campaign.

“Some rumours that Allan McGregor is set to sign a new contract, I’m led to believe that is just rumours at the moment,” explains David Edgar on the Daily Update for Monday 9th May.

“Only Allan McGregor knows but I don’t think he’ll be continuing his career next season.

“Unless there is some development, then I think certainly the indicators are that he’s planning on hanging up his boots at the end of this season and understandably so.

“When you think about going out with the final in Seville, then I think it would be very, very difficult to top that.

“Anything can happen of course, never say never, but I think that these rumours are very much newspapers taking a flyer.

“But we’ll see; you never know but certainly from what I’m led to believe no talks or anything at this stage have taken place.”

Allan McGregor has given remarkable years of service to Rangers and after missing out on the 2008 UEFA Cup Final through injury, has a shot at redemption in the Europa League Final in Seville.

Perhaps this could prove the perfect opportunity for Allan McGregor to bow out on a career well spent amid rumours of a new contract.

Meanwhile, Rangers fans eagerly await an update regarding the situation in Seville ahead of the match.
