Once-Rangers linked Danilho Doekhi is on the transfer shortlist of several of European football’s top clubs, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.
The Dutch defender, 25, has just scored a controversial winner for Union Berlin in a Bundesliga clash with FC Wolfsburg.
The goal came in the 25th minute of injury time, the game having been stopped due to a series of fan protests over foreign investment into the German league.
It’s the latest big moment for Danilho Doekhi, who is about to enter the final year of his Union Berlin contract with interest from Germany, Italy, and England in his signature.
Union Berlin’s Danilho Doekhi a wanted man
Rangers fans will remember the name Danilho Doekhi from strong links to the club in 2022.
The Gers were named as one of the frontrunners to sign the centre-back as his contract ticked down at Vitesse Arnhem.
Former Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson also claimed that the Ibrox side came close to signing a Dutch player during Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s time in charge as manager.
Whilst Wilson did not name names, it’s believed that he may have been talking about Danilho Doekhi.
Unwilling to cough up in the January, the centre-back opted to join Union Berlin in the summer and after qualifying for the Champions League last season, the club find themselves in 15th this campaign.
Now one of Europe’s hottest defensive transfer options, this is another one that got away for the Ibrox side.
Rangers transfer near miss
Whilst you can’t force a player to sign on the dotted line at Rangers, Danilho Doekhi is just one of a series of nearly transfers in recent seasons.
Fellow Dutch players such as Joey Veerman – whose been lighting up a form PSV side this season – and Tijjani Reijnders – who Bert Konterman convinced not to move to Ibrox – are two stand out examples.
There is also Andreas Skov Olsen, whose form at Club Brugge has been electric, whilst there are several other players linked who’ve gone on to impress elsewhere in Europe.

Securing these sorts of talents before they get that mid-tier move is essential for Rangers and all of those mentioned are now firmly out of the club’s reach.
With Nils Koppen now in the door, the focus is on securing young talents before the club is priced out and Rangers are already making steps in the right direction.
