Rangers are reportedly “monitoring” the situation surrounding Liverpool striker Divock Origi as the Anfield club look to sell the Belgian international to fund a £40m move.
Origi joined Liverpool in a £10m deal from Ligue 1 Lille way back in 2014 with the now 26-year-old striker still a teenager [BBC Sport].
However, because Origi was loaned back to Lille for the 14/15 season he never played with Gers manager Steven Gerrard during his final season on Merseyside.
The striker has been in and out of the Anfield side ever since but played a particularly important role in the club’s Champions League win of 2019.
Oirgi scored a double in the famous 4-0 Liverpool semi-final comeback win to topple Barcelona and also added another in the club’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Final.
According to 90min.com, Rangers are one of a number of clubs monitoring the Belgian as Jurgen Klopp’s side look to make way for a possible £40m move for Watford star Ismaila Sarr.
That report claims that Rangers are joined by Old Firm rivals Celtic and Premier League sides Southampton, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle in “monitoring” the striker.
90min.com also claim that Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri could also be sold to make way for the Senegalese winger, with the Anfield club wanting £15m for the ex-Bayern Munich man.
This would certainly represent a major signing for the Gers but given the Anfield club reportedly want him to move on full-time – and the wages he’d command – we remain sceptical.
Not only that, but as things stand the Gers are well-stocked in the striker position with Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe adding firepower.
But perhaps Origi could be a fine replacement for a leading Gers star should one European giant follow up on reports he is the club’s “main target” this summer.
