Rangers ‘monitoring’ 59-cap bluenose defender who sold Todd Cantwell on move to Ibrox

It’s no secret that Rangers are on the hunt for a new centre-back this January.

The Ibrox side have seen their squad decimated with as many as eight Rangers players set to miss the Scottish Premiership clash with Dundee this week.

Rangers are particularly short at the heart of the club’s defence and there have been plenty of names linked to the Ibrox club this January.

But according to reports south of the border, there is one experienced bluenose defender who has Rangers keeping tabs on the English Championship.

Rangers ‘monitoring’ Grant Hanley

Scotland international Grant Hanley may not be the most glamorous central defender in global football but Rangers are reportedly monitoring the Norwich City star’s situation.

Whilst Rangers fans might’ve preferred the likes of Kaiky Rodrigues, local outlet the Pink Un are reporting that the Gers are ‘monitoring’ Grant Hanley’s situation at Carrow Road, citing ‘speculation north of the border’.

The 33-year-old centre-back spent time with Rangers as a youth but has spent his entire professional career in England, playing for Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and Norwich City.

Having joined the Canaries way back in 2017, the 59-cap Scotland star has found chances at a premium at Norwich this season, making just three appearances in the English Championship.

The defender hasn’t started a match in the English second flight since being subbed off in the 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on the opening day way back in August.

Bluenose defender sold Todd Cantwell on Ibrox

The Pink Un report claims that Rangers aren’t the only ones considering a January move for Grant Hanley either.

Suggesting that Blackburn Rovers could be lining up a sensational return for the Dumfries born defender, Hanley might be given the chance to hook up with Todd Cantwell at Ewood Park.

The two played together for several years at Norwich City before Cantwell left England to play for Rangers in January 2023.

At the time, Cantwell revealed that he’d discussed Rangers with both Grant Hanley and Kenny McLean, confirming that both are big bluenoses.

Whilst Grant Hanley might not be the most glamorous of transfer links this January, a no-nonsense experienced centre-half with Rangers allegiances might not be such a bad idea.

“I did speak to (Grant Hanley and Kenny McLean),” said Cantwell in February 2023 as quoted by the Scottish Daily Express.

”They were particularly excited when they heard about the possibility of me coming here.

“It was either they wanted me out of their changing room or they were happy to have me here!

“I don’t know which one it was! All joking aside, they’re great guys and I think I realised how big Rangers are – or how much they love Rangers – when I was linked to come here.

“The advice from both of them was just, ‘Go and be you. The fans will love you if you give 100 percent and play the way you play when you’re at your happiest.

“That’s the message from everyone I’ve spoken to.”
