Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara to be offered new contract, says Gerrard

Steven Gerrard says Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara is set to be offered a new contract by the club amid speculation about his future, as quoted by the Glasgow Times.

The Finland international has benefitted from an injury to Ryan Jack to gain an extended run in the starting XI and has impressed in recent times.

However, the Daily Record claimed earlier this week, citing reports in Belgium, that the player had been a ‘live target’ for Anderlecht earlier in the transfer window.

Gerrard insists his player is staying put, though.

“Glen Kamara is not going anywhere,” he said, as quoted by the Glasgow Times. “We are going to offer Glen a new contract when the time is right. The plan was always to get this window out of the way before we spoke about that. Glen is aware of that.”

“We love Glen Kamara here. He is a fantastic player. We believe Glen is capable of playing for most teams out there at any level. He is that talented. In terms of what we think of Glen, we want him to stay and be part of this in the short and long term.

“He will always receive the ball. He takes responsibility and is playing with personality. We’re absolutely delighted with Glen and he deserves a new deal 100 per cent. He won’t be going to Anderlecht. I guarantee you that.”

Kamara is already under contract until 2023, having signed a four-and-a-half-year deal after arriving from Dundee in January 2019, so it speaks volumes for how highly he’s rated by Rangers that a new contract will soon be on the table.

The 24-year-old isn’t yet the finished article and he frustrates supporters at times in domestic fixtures with his conservative passing.

However, as Gerrard has pointed out here, he always makes himself available to get on the ball, while he tends to raise his game for big European nights.

The Gers boss may want another midfielder in before the window closes, but his comments here make it clear that he recognises the value of one he’s already got.
