Rangers may now be one step closer to landing £3m Angus Gunn from Norwich

Should Norwich City miss out on a place in the Championship play-off places, no one at Carrow Road would be able to place the blame at the door of Angus Gunn.

The Canaries shot-stopper has conceded only three goals in the last six league games. That Norwich have won only one of those, then, is not so much down to him as it is those at the other end of the pitch. You know, the ones paid to keep put the ball in the net rather than keep it out.

Josh Sergeant has misplaced his shooting boots again. The soon-to-be-departing Teemu Pukki, meanwhile, is no longer the fearsome, Golden Boot-bothering force of old.

Gunn, the BBC Sport say, had the best save percentage of any goalkeeper in the Championship (74.7 per cent) up until the March international break. And if Scotland qualify for Euro 2024 (who’s to say they can’t either, if that 2-0 triumph over Spain is anything to go by?) the smart money may be on Gunn starting between the sticks in Germany.

“His performances have been excellent. The possibility is definitely there (for Gunn to become Scotland’s number one),” Celtic legend Jackie McNamara tells Yahoo Sport.

“The prospect is real.”

Gunn kept a clean sheet in that deserved victory over Spain at Hampden Park. A fine display of confidence, maturity and presence is unlikely to have Rangers backing away from a man who, the Scottish Sun say, has been lined up as a potential £3 million replacement for 41-year-old Ibrox icon Allan McGregor.

With a contract until 2025, Norwich are under no immediate pressure to sell. But Champions League football and a shot at silverware at Rangers would likely to appeal to a man who may be consigned to another season of second-tier football if he is to stay at Norwich. Especially if he is serious about nailing down a spot in Scotland’s XI.

Monday’s 0-0 draw at home to relegation threatened Rotherham means Norwich are now eighth in the table; on the outside looking in as far as the play-ofs are concerned. They remain in touching distance of the top six but travel to fourth-place Middlesbrough on the back of one win in six.

Norwich also have to visit at West Brom side with one of the best home records in the entire division. And, if recent form is anything to go by, even Gunn’s cat-like reflexes may not be enough to secure the points required for a trip to Wembley.
