Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has previously bemoaned a lack of investment at the club this summer with Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman the most high-profile target of the window.
The Gers didn’t splash out any transfer fees this summer as they signed John Lundstram and Fashion Sakala on pre-contract deals and came to an arrangement with Huddersfield regarding Juninho Bacuna.
But those £7m links to Veerman dominated much of the early season conversation with the deal appearing to die when the club was knocked out of the Champions League.
That QR3 defeat to Malmo in Sweden was a painful one for supporters and it has unfortunately set the tone for the season when it comes to the club’s business.
Automatic qualification beckons for the Premiership winners this season and perhaps Rangers fans might be looking at a return for Heerenveen midfielder Veerman if the club secures 56.
Rangers won’t be the only ones tailing Joey Veerman
But the Ibrox club may well have missed the bus when it comes to the talented Netherlands midfielder who narrowly missed out on the country’s first team during the last international break.
Veerman’s early-season form has yet to be recognised by Louis van Gaal but there’s a growing feeling Joey is on the fringes of a competitive pool of Dutch midfielders.
Linked to the likes of Ajax, Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar in his homeland and Serie A sides Verona and Atalanta during the break, the player is well known to several high-profile sides.
Veerman, 22, would eventually stay put at Heerenveen after no-one met the Eredivisie club’s widely reported €10m (£8m) asking price but he has not let it affect his performances.
So far Veerman has played every minute for Heerenveen this season, with the midfielder scoring once and laying on four assists in nine Dutch top-flight appearances.
Should the midfielder continue to impress for Heerenveen – who sit 8th in the Eredivisie – then we suspect there may be even more clubs than Rangers knocking by the time the window closes next summer.
Whilst Veerman never moved to Rangers, the Ibrox side are currently rueing the absence of another £7m-rated star who did make the switch to Glasgow.
