The Daily Record reports that Rangers are looking to offload both Glenn Middleton and Greg Docherty before the January transfer window slams shut on Friday night.

There has been something of a winter cull at Ibrox, with Eros Grezda, Eduardo Herrera, Andy King and Jamie Murphy all leaving the club, either on permanent or loan deals.

To date, there have been no signings, although winger, Jake Hastie, has been recalled from Rotherham United.

It’s suggested that the Gers are comfortable with at least a couple more departures, though, in the shape of Middleton and Docherty, with the latter still allegedly being targeted by both Charlton and Sunderland.

Verdict

Given these players’ lack of recent contribution to the first team, it makes sense that Gerrard and co. would be happy for both to be moved on.

Middleton made 23 first-team appearances by Christmas of last season, but he’s since fallen well down the pecking order. He featured just three times in 2019 and hasn’t been seen at all in Light Blue this season, spending the first half of the campaign on loan at Hibernian.

Based on recent squad selections, in terms of out-and-out wingers, he’s currently behind Ryan Kent, Sheyi Ojo, Brandon Barker and Jordan Jones.

As for Docherty, he featured on a handful of occasions at the very start of the season but hasn’t made a matchday squad since August.

Even an injury to Ryan Jack at Hearts wasn’t enough to bring the 23-year-old into the squad against Ross County on Wednesday night, and he’ll surely be itching to secure a loan exit.

If nothing can be agreed with either Charlton or Sunderland, he’s likely to be stuck kicking his heels for another six months.
