The Daily Record reports that Rangers are looking to ‘offload’ both Brandon Barker and Jordan Jones before the end of the January transfer window.
The two wingers, aged 23 and 25 respectively, only joined the club in the summer, but it’s suggested their departures may be required in order to make a signing.
Barker joined from Manchester City signing a three-year contract which the Record report claims is worth more in excess of 10k-a-week.
He scored on his Premiership debut for the club against Livingston, but it’s the only direct goal contribution he’s managed in 11 appearances.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland international, Jones, joined from Kilmarnock in the summer on a four-year contract.
He spent much of the first half of the season out with a knee injury after lunging in on Celtic’s Moritz Bauer, but has also made 11 appearances, registering two assists.
Several Engish clubs are allegedly interested in Jones, including Stoke City and Middlesbrough [Daily Mail].
Verdict
It would be a real surprise if Rangers shipped out both Barker and Jones before the end of the week, especially after the recent departure of Jamie Murphy on loan to Burton Albion.
That scenario would leave Ryan Kent and Sheyi Ojo as the only remaining out and out wingers who have represented the first team this season, and the latter has severely underperformed in recent months.
The departure of one seems more plausible, though and if one were to go, most fans would prefer it to be Barker.
He showed very few glimpses of quality over the first half of the season and after failing to impress against both Lokomotiv Tashkent and Stranraer in recent weeks, was left out of the matchday squad for the trip to Tynecastle on Sunday.
As for Jones, supporters were unimpressed by his showing against Stranraer, too.
However, he at least has the excuse of having been out of action for several months.
Before his injury, Jones had shown an ability to beat players and crossed well from wide areas – registering the assist for Morelos’ vital late Europa League Qualifying winner against Legia Warsaw.
