As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Rangers loanee Ross McCrorie says it was his call to head out on loan this summer.
A graduate of the Gers academy, the 21-year-old is a real fan favourite at Ibrox. Last season, after a series of strong displays, he was hailed as a ‘future captain’ by both Steven Gerrard [Daily Record] and the club’s supporters.
Yet, while a bluenose himself, McCrorie says he made the call to leave Ibrox this summer. That’s because Steven Gerrard couldn’t guarantee him a regular place in the XI.

Rangers loanee McCrorie says he wanted temporary exit
He [Gerrard] knew I wanted to be playing every week,” said the Scotland U21 international, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “I told him that. He could’ve been selfish and kept me at Rangers, but he said I had to be selfish.”
“I’m 21 and I need to play games to develop. I don’t want to be sitting about anymore. I love playing every week and feeling part of the team.
“When I was out of the team at Rangers it was frustrating. I don’t like sitting on the sidelines. That was one of the things the gaffer and I spoke about. I pushed it through and I’m happy I’m at Portsmouth.”

Verdict
McCrorie’s comments here provide insight into his ambition. He started some big games last season, including multiple Old Firms and the do or die Europa League clash away at Rapid Vienna.
However, it’s abundantly clear that that wasn’t enough for him. It’s implied that not only did his infrequent appearances frustrate him, but that he didn’t feel like an integral part of things at Ibrox.
Given his age, he must be given credit for communicating that to the manager and securing his loan move elsewhere.

He’s clearly focused on playing week in week out with Pompey and is keen to see what level he can take his game to as a result.
Competition for places in Rangers’ midfield is intense right now, with Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Andy King and Greg Docherty competing for three spots. Scott Arfield can also drop back into a central role.
McCrorie is undoubtedly better off out of there for the time being, but come 2020/21 he may be better placed. Andy King is only on a season-long loan, while Steven Davis’ current deal expires in the summer. Furthermore, there are question marks over Greg Docherty’s future.
Therefore, while out of sight, for now, there’s still every chance that this young midfielder could come back to play a big role in the years ahead.
