Rangers have been linked with a move for Hibs left-back Josh Doig amid links between Premier League club Watford and resident left-sided full-back Borna Barisic.

The Hornets are the latest side to be linked to the Croatian international with a report in the Athletic suggesting that the ex-NK Osijek captain is valued anywhere up to £8m.

Hibernian v Santa Coloma - UEFA Conference League Second Qualifying Round: First Leg
EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND – JULY 22: Josh Doig of Hibernian FC before the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round first leg match between Hibernian FC and FC Santa Coloma at Easter Road on July 22, 2021 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

However, the same report has also suggested that Hibs teenager Josh Doig is on a shortlist of potential players who could move to Watford, with Rangers also a potential destination if Claudio Ranieri’s team move for Borna.

Not only that, but that report claims that Josh Doig could be available for anywhere up to £3m despite the fact the talented 19-year-old signed a new deal at Easter Road earlier in the season.

The deal – only signed in November – ties Josh Doig to Hibernian until the summer of 2026 meaning the Edinburgh club have substantial bargaining power when it comes to the left-back.

Watford aren’t the only club who’ve been mentioned alongside Barisic – Aston Villa and potential reunion with Steven Gerrard has also been mooted – but Rangers aren’t under pressure to sell with the 29-year-old contracted to Ibrox until the summer of 2024.

Josh Doig is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in the Scottish game and after breaking through into the Hibs side last season has already made 56 appearances for the club.

Seeing one of their top assets and talents leave for Rangers would also guarantee leaving fans of our Scottish Premiership rivals Hibs sick.

Hibs Josh Doig linked as van Bronckhorst sends Rangers January warning

The report also comes amid ominous comments from Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst regarding the upcoming transfer window.

The Dutch coach explained that his main objective for the month of January is coming out of it with his squad in as good as or better than the strong place it’s currently in.

“We have quite a lot of meetings with (sporting director) Ross Wilson so we know what we want to do [and] in which areas we have to be prepared if something happens,” said van Bronckhorst [Rangers].

“It’s always good to have the squad you want at the end of the window, it’s never good when you are a less squad than when you came in.

“The objective for us is when the transfer window ends we should have a quality squad as well.”

Borna Barisic isn’t the only Rangers player being linked with the exit door either, with one key Rangers star being linked to yet another Premier League side.
