Rangers linked striker set for Champions League move to replace £32m top scorer

Philippe Clement knew that Rangers would have to keep the goalscoring chances to a premium.

But, then again, that is easier said than done when coming up against a man who can turn very little into something special in the blink of an eye.

After a rather hopeful pass was hooked upfield in the dying seconds before stoppage time, a striker who had been linked semi-regularly with Rangers in the months prior shrugged off Conor Goldson and flicked a clever finish past an onrushing Jack Butland.

That, Clement said, is what Bojan Miovski is all about.

“We played a really good game today. A really dominant game,” Clement explained at full-time. “But these are the kind of games you have in a season when the circumstances are not on your side. You totally dominate the first-half, you have the chances to score more than one.

“And then you have this one moment, and it is the quality of Miovski. He doesn’t need much to score goals.”

Rangers were linked with Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski

Rangers, fortunately, would not be denied on the night.

Todd Cantwell fizzed a second-half winner to defeat a Neil Warnock-led Aberdeen side on a freezing February in Glasgow. Six months on, there appears to be a very real chance that neither Warnock, Cantwell or Miovski will be earning their living on Scottish soil in the very near future.

Warnock has already gone, lasting about as long as those frostbite-ridden seagulls in his favourite Dons-based tale. Cantwell is certain to go too, out of favour at Rangers after telling Clement he wanted to leave.

As for Miovski, while those Rangers links have dried up, reports suggesting the Aberdeen talisman could be on his way to rather warmer climes have taken their place.

The Daily Record report that talks are ongoing with Girona. Barcelona’s Catalan neighbours have had an opening bid rejected but there is a growing belief that a deal will be reached.

Aberdeen will lose their top scorer – the man who found the net 26 times last term – but will at least make a considerable profit on a player who arrived in the Premiership to relatively little fanfare two years back.

The £500,000 signing from MTK Budapest reportedly has his heart set on Girona and you can see why.

Not only can Michel’s free-wheeling side offer Champions League football – qualifying for the competition for the very first time – their swashbuckling, goals-by-the-bucketload style should ensure that Miovski has plenty of chances to gorge himself upon.

The Montenegrin certainly will not go hungry at the Estadi Montilivi.

Though he will arrive with big boots to fill. Artem Dovbyk plundered La Liga’s Golden Boot award last season before joining Italian giants Roma to the tune of £32.5 million.

Do Rangers still need to upgrade on Cyriel Dessers?

Whether Rangers move to bring in a new centre-forward of their own before the September deadline remains to be seen. Links continue to persist regarding Hearts hitman Lawrence Shankland amongst others.

The much-maligned Cyriel Dessers, at least, silenced his doubters with a dramatic late winner in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League group-stages.

“The first three or four months, Dessers was woeful. He was running offside, he didn’t look fit,” former Ibrox midfielder Derek Ferguson told the BBC Sport. “But what you can’t question is his character.

“He’s like marmite, you either love or hate him. Sometimes, you can’t get it out your mind how poor he was at the start.

“He deserved his goal tonight, with his work rate and desire. Centre-forwards need that belief in themselves. Dessers has taken that criticism on the chin and he keeps coming back for more.”
