Rangers-linked striker Juan Alegria was missing from his current club’s matchday squad on Monday, around a fortnight after a report claimed that an Ibrox deal was at an ‘advanced stage’.

The Gers have been linked with the FC Honka player for some time, with the Daily Record asserting in December 2020 that he’d been on the club’s radar for 12 months.

Steven Gerrard confirmed at the time that he was aware of the 19-year-old [Glasgow Times] – who is likely to be an Academy signing – and it was reported that a deal was 90 per cent done.

Earlier this month, the Daily Record asserted that the transfer had been held up by Brexit-related complications but had now reached an ‘advanced stage’.

Amid the speculation, Alegria has still been turning out for Honka in the Veikkausliiga and in Europa Conference League qualifying.

The Finnish side’s European hopes were ended by Slovenian club Domžale late last month but they have been faring decently in domestic competition, with Alegria recently notching a brace in a 4-1 win over Ilves Tampere.

However, when they were in action against SJK on Monday, the Ibrox-linked forward wasn’t included in the squad.

The reason for his absence is unclear at this point but it’s certainly unlikely to be performance-related given his efforts in the previous league fixture.

It could well be a sign that his long-awaited move to Rangers is getting closer and that his current club are making sure he avoids injury so there’s less chance of a last-minute hitch.

In other transfer news, a Rangers insider has set the record straight after a report stated that the club had rejected three offers for Ianis Hagi.
