Rangers linked Chelsea starlet to leave Stamford Bridge on loan before transfer deadline - report

Football London reports that Rangers linked starlet Billy Gilmour is set to leave Stamford Bridge on loan before the end of the transfer window after he was left out of the Chelsea squad for a Premier League fixture against Burnley on Sunday.

Gilmour came through the Academy at Ibrox and was sold to Chelsea for an initial fee of £2m in 2017 [Sunday Post].

He broke into the Blues’ first-team last season and impressed but a knee injury disrupted his start to the current campaign, and playing time has been hard to come by since his return to fitness.

It was from that context that the Scottish Sun reported in December that Rangers were keen on a loan swoop for the Scotland youth international.

Steven Gerrard responded by calling Gilmour a “fabulous little player” but insisted that there had been “no contact between the clubs or the managers” [RangersTV].

However, links resurfaced recently.

Days before his sacking as Chelsea boss earlier this month, Frank Lampard refused to rule out a loan exit for Gilmour [Daily Mail].

Lampard’s dismissal reportedly left Gilmour uncertain, with the 19-year-old looking to play regularly between now and the end of the season with the aim of breaking into the Scotland squad ahead of the European Championships.

Ibrox was touted as a potential destination for a loan move [Mirror] and although new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel praised Gilmour shortly after his appointment, he has left Gilmour out of the matchday squad for each of his first two Premier League matches in charge.

The most recent of those was the early kick-off against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The exclusion came less than 48 hours before the end of the transfer window and Football London have since reported that Gilmour will be heading out on loan before the deadline.

The report doesn’t provide his destination, but it does all but rule out both West Ham and Bournemouth, who were previously been credited with interest.

The two permitted loan spots in the Hammers’ squad have already been filled, while the Cherries recently completed deals for two midfielders in Ben Pearson and Jack Wilshere.

Rangers are also relatively well-stocked in midfield, with Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, Joe Aribo and Bongani Zungu all available and Scott Arfield set to return from injury next month.

Yet, a player of Gilmour’s ability would surely tempt Steven Gerrard, who isn’t only looking to seal the Premiership title over the coming months but also to compete for the Scottish Cup and in the Europa League.

Another Rangers linked midfielder currently playing in England put an end to speculation over his future earlier this weekend.
