Agent suggests Rangers have missed boat on Lewis Ferguson amid questions from inside Ibrox

Rangers could see Lewis Ferguson move on to AC Milan or Juventus with his agent admitting some bemusement inside Ibrox.

Some rumours just seem to come along again and again, whether that’s from supporters or through the media.

One that springs to mind for Rangers surrounds midfielder Ferguson.

It felt like pundits were constantly touting Ferguson for a move to Ibrox to follow on the family legacy.

Father Derek Ferguson played for Rangers, as did uncle Barry Ferguson.

Lewis himself even started in the Rangers ranks before being released in 2013, paving the way for moves to Hamilton Academical and Aberdeen.

The Scottish Sun reported back in May of 2020 that Steven Gerrard had identified Aberdeen midfielder Ferguson as a top target for a move to Ibrox.

That never materialised and whilst fans debated whether Ferguson was really good enough for Rangers, the Gers missed the boat.

People inside Rangers baffled at no move for Lewis Ferguson

Ferguson moved on to Bologna last summer and has been impressing over in Italy.

The 23-year-old is bound to be attracting interest but an emotional move to Rangers appears to be out of the question.

Ferguson’s agent Bill McMurdo has now told the Daily Record that Ferguson is wanted by Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus.

A fee of around £8million is mentioned although McMurdo thinks Bologna could rake in even more based on their sale of Aaron Hickey to Brentford.

McMurdo suggests that there was absolutely no contact from either Rangers or Celtic when Ferguson was leaving Aberdeen.

McMurdo adds that there were people inside Ibrox calling him asking why Rangers weren’t chasing a deal for the midfielder.

Now seemingly worth beyond what Rangers or Celtic can pay, it looks like Ferguson won’t be back in the Scottish Premiership for a long time – and Rangers may well rue not making their move.

“I know for a fact there is interest there from AC Milan and Juventus. Bologna are very open about the whole thing and have kept me in the picture,” said McMurdo. “I’ve got people who work for me in Italy and they’ve had a few enquiries. I reckon they’ll be looking for a minimum of £8m. Having said that, they sold Aaron Hickey for £20m and he only played 48 games for them.

“I think it will happen. He deserves it. He’s had to learn the language and a new culture and he’s done very well with that. He’s very professional. I’ve dealt with a lot of good players – a lot of duds too – but he’s in a class of his own.”

“There was no contact from either Rangers or Celtic. I was even getting people who were involved at Ibrox, phoning me and asking: ‘Are you sure we’re not interested here?’ I don’t think a Scottish club will pay the money they’ll be looking for now. If he desires it, there’s not a doubt in my mind that he will play in the English Premier League. But I think if he got an offer from a big team in Italy or Germany, he’d go there,” he added.
