‘Not a chance’: Joe Savage claims Rangers can’t afford to bring Lawrence Shankland to Ibrox

Rangers ended the January window without signing a new striker despite some suggestions of a move for Lawrence Shankland.

The Gers were expected to pounce for a new goalscorer in the winter window.

Alfredo Morelos could be on the move in the summer and Antonio Colak has suffered some injury problems.

The same goes for Kemar Roofe, so many fans were looking for a new striker to arrive at Ibrox.

Playmaker Todd Cantwell and midfielder Nicolas Raskin arrived to bolster Michael Beale’s squad but no striker was secured.

There weren’t even many rumours surrounding a potential striker signing, but some were backing Lawrence Shankland for Ibrox.

Shankland is a lifelong Rangers fan and may well fancy playing for his boyhood club one day.

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson was quoted by the Daily Record as saying that Rangers will have been keeping tabs on his Shankland’s displays for Hearts.

The 27-year-old joined Hearts from Beerschot last summer and has been a goal machine for the Tynecastle club.

20 goals and four assists in 33 games across all competitions is a hugely impressive record for Shankland… the kind of numbers Rangers would love from a striker.

Rangers seemingly didn’t make a move for Shankland in January but Hearts don’t seem to be worried about the Gers.

Hearts sporting director Joe Savage has told BBC Sport that he doesn’t think Rangers could even afford Shankland at this point.

Savage claims that Shankland is not for sale at any price and will finish the season with 30-odd goals to his name.

Savage added that Shankland can now become a Hearts legend moving forward, seemingly ruling out a move to Rangers any time soon.

“They wouldn’t be able to afford him! I can tell you that right now,” said Savage. “Not a chance. No price, he’s not for sale. Shanks is not going anywhere. Shanks is going to get 30-odd goals for us this season and become an absolute Hearts legend, that’s the plan!” he added.
