Rangers have announced that fringe defender Jack Simpson has officially left Ibrox to sign for English Championship Cardiff City.

The Gers made the announcement ahead of their Champions League qualifying clash with Belgian outfit Union Saint Gilloise, the Ibrox side going on to win the clash 3-0 and 3-2 on aggregate.

Interestingly, this meant the announcement was also made ahead of Cardiff’s League Cup clash with Portsmouth with Simpson’s new side on the end of a 3-0 hammering.

The Welsh club’s special media even claimed the defender was on hand to watch the beating unfold with Steve Morrison’s side now out of the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to Cardiff’s official media after signing the two-year deal on an undisclosed fee, Jack Simpson claimed he was “excited” to move to the Welsh capital.

“I’m very excited to join the Club. I spoke to the manager about what he’s trying to do here,” said Simpson [Cardiff City].

“I’m a ball playing centre half, and hopefully that’ll suit the way the team are playing now.

“I’m excited to be here. I want to help the team and play in as many games as possible.”

Rangers defender Jack Simpson moves to Cardiff City

Jack Simpson, 25, has struggled for minutes ever since joining Rangers 18 months ago and it had been well assumed that a transfer out of the club was for the best this summer.

Rangers have a host of defensive options on their books and it was never likely the former Bournemouth defender would shift Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, Fil Helander or John Souttar.

With the likes of Leon King also coming through at the club there was a feeling Giovanni van Bronckhorst would be unlikely to afford minutes to Simpson with such a major talent in the background.

Rangers will actually be relieved to have finally moved Simpson on, with the defender still having three years to run on a four-and-a-half year deal having made only 14 appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, a one-time reported Rangers target looks set to visit Ibrox after all as the Champions League stage is set.
