Rangers in big money Malik Tillman bonus as clause collapse revealed

Rangers would have wanted to keep Malik Tillman after impressing last season, however, after news of the deal being off broke, it looks like they are getting the next best thing.

Confusion has always surrounded what type of option to buy the Light Blues had for the 20-year old but it has now emerged that Ross Wilson pulled off one last deal that sees an extra few pounds in the transfer kitty.

As reported by The Rangers Review, Rangers could stand to receive as much as £2m in compensation from Bayern Munich with Malik Tillman attracting interest from across Europe.

In the report, one clarification made is on the German giant’s side of the clause.

If Rangers had bought Malik Tillman for the £5.8m option to buy fee, Bayern would then have been able to buy him back for just £9m.

We were never going to make big money on the USA international even if he had been a success and wanted to move to Ibrox permanently.

It was a deal that suited all parties; the player got valuable game time, Rangers got a first-team ready player who contributed and Bayern saw their prospect increase in value after proving he could cut it at senior level.

So what are Rangers getting out of it now after missing out on Malik Tillman?

How are Rangers quids in on Malik Tillman deal?

According to The Rangers Review, quite a lot:

“The Rangers Review can confirm that Bayern Munich have cancelled the option-to-buy clause that was inserted in the deal to bring the 21-year-old to Ibrox on loan last summer.

“However, Rangers will be compensated for the German club’s decision with a £1 million cancellation fee.

“As part of the cancellation clause, Rangers will also be entitled to 10% of the fee Bayern receive from selling Tillman this summer. “

With Tillman being expected to leave Bayern now for over £10m, given their buyback valuation, that’s a cool £2m that Rangers will be making off a player that isn’t even ours – at least.

The suggestion in the article is that neither Rangers nor Bayern expected Tillman to stay in Glasgow beyond this season so being compensated to this extent is a big win.

If anything, it also helps to clear up why what seemed like a relatively straight forward deal hadn’t been concluded yet.

It’s not often a player impresses on loan and then makes the club money after they leave.

He’s magic you know?
