Rangers in £4.7m transfer admission as Michael Beale pair get ready for Ibrox chop

As Jose Cifuentes looks to follow Sam Lammers out of Rangers, the club appear to be admitting Michael Beale got it wrong in the transfer market.

Rangers reportedly shelled out a combined £4.7m to bring the Ecuadorean midfielder and Dutch forward to the club under the English manager.

But only six months on Sam Lammers is back in the Netherlands with Utrecht and now Jose Cifuentes appears to be closing in on a deal to bring him to Turkey.

Both players – who arrived with big reputations but have delivered little – are now skeedadling out of Ibrox as quickly as they arrived after a disastrous six months at the club.

Jose Cifuentes to follow Sam Lammers out of Ibrox

Sam Lammers, who cost £3.5m from Atalanta, couldn’t get out the door quick enough and despite playing 31 times jumped ship to Utrecht at the first opportunity.

Jose Cifuentes, a £1.2m signing from LAFC, has barely kicked a ball as of late and certainly doesn’t look the most comfortable in Scotland after a few years in California.

Reports have suggested that Rangers have accepted a £2m loan-to-buy offer from Turkish club Rizespor with the ball in Cifuentes’s court with regards a move.

Both players arrived with big reputations and clearly didn’t take well to the heat of the Ibrox pressure cooker.

Now, the club are signalling that they got these two particular gambles wrong with everyone at Rangers now working to start getting things right in the transfer window.

Mixed Michael Beale Rangers transfer window

There’s an old adage about clubs never being able to get every signing right, but with Rangers the hit rate has been too low, for too long.

That two of the club’s most expensive Michael Beale signings are now for the off is the latest admission of transfer failure in Glasgow.

But it also points to the mentality of players not befitting the club, with Cyriel Dessers an example of someone who was heavily lambasted now tentatively beginning to win over fans.

Throw in that injury to £6m striker Danilo and suddenly the four Michael Beale signings who cost money in transfer fees have still got it all to prove.

Jack Butland, Abdallah Sima, Leon Balogun, and Dujon Sterling can be described as hits so far, with the jury still out on the perennially injured Kieran Dowell.

But as Jose Cifuentes lines up a transfer exit alongside Sam Lammers, the onus is on new Rangers boss Philippe Clement to turn it around on a tight budget.

In that vein, the Rangers manager had an exciting update following the clash with St Mirren with fans buckling up ahead of a rollercoaster few days.
