Rangers have an easy decision on Alfredo Morelos amid imminent Santos exit

Rangers will now see Alfredo Morelos become a free agent once again – but no, he shouldn’t be offered a return to Ibrox in January.

Rangers simply had to make changes over the summer and that meant letting some long-serving players move on.

Allan McGregor’s time came to an end whilst Scott Arfield and Ryan Kent joined Charlotte FC and Fenerbahce respectively.

Alfredo Morelos moved on too with his contract expiring, paving the way for a move to Brazil with Santos.

The Colombian spent the whole summer window as a free agent as interest seemed to be low, but headed to Brazil in September.

Alfredo Morelos set to become a free again

Morelos signed a two-year deal with Santos but he is already on the verge of leaving.

Bolavip in Brazil report that Morelos has a release clause in his contract meaning Santos can let him go upon relegation.

Santos have now been relegated and a new president is arriving in Marcelo Teixeira.

Teixeira wants to revamp Santos after relegation and it’s stated that letting Morelos go will be one of his first decisions.

Morelos didn’t exactly have the best time with Santos, playing just 76 minutes across three appearances.

Injury curtailed the 27-year-old’s impact and it now looks like he will be leaving the club following relegation from Brazil’s top flight.

No, Rangers shouldn’t sign Morelos

The Rangers squad may well be need of another striker come January with Danilo now facing a spell on the sidelines.

Some have wondered whether Santos being relegated could pave the way for Morelos to make a stunning Ibrox return.

We would ultimately like to see Rangers move on, especially after Morelos flattered to deceive last season.

12 goals in all competitions was well short of what Morelos was capable of and the time was right for him to leave Ibrox.

A return to Glasgow just months later would be a strange decision and Rangers need to think about finding the next Morelos rather than going back to him.

When Rangers signed Morelos from HJK in 2017, he was a young talent who didn’t break the bank and could have been sold for much more if Rangers had cashed in rather than allowing his deal to run down.

That is the model many Rangers fans would like to see and it’s one which could make Rangers money down the line – just as we saw with Calvin Bassey.

Rangers spent plenty on attackers over the summer and Morelos may appeal as a free agent, but we want to see some new blood at Ibrox rather than see Morelos return.
