Rangers have received a massive double boost in their pursuit of Norwegian midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl following a fresh update from Sky Sports News.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has emerged as a key summer target for Derek McInnes as the Ibrox side continue their extensive squad rebuild.

While EFL Championship outfit Cardiff City have actively stepped up their interest, the latest developments have firmly played into the hands of the Scottish Premiership giants.

According to Sky Sports, the Glasgow side remain in active negotiations with Tromso, and they now hold a crucial card in the race to land the player.

Cardiff City’s £5.5m bid rejected amid new asking price

Cardiff City made their first major move in the transfer battle by submitting a formal £5.5million opening bid for the Norway Under-21 international. However, Tromso swiftly rejected that proposal.

In a positive turn of events for potential suitors, Tromso’s financial stance appears to have softened. While the Eliteserien side were previously holding out for a £7.5m fee, Sky Sports reports that they are now willing to accept a cheaper baseline.

The Norwegian club are now looking for a base fee of £6.8m plus realistic performance-related add-ons.

The lower entry point opens the door wide for Rangers to structure a package that meets Tromso’s expectations.

It is worth noting that the Govan club have already had a £5.3m bid rejected by Tromso.

Hjerto-Dahl makes Rangers stance clear

While negotiating the final fee remains the hurdle to clear, Rangers have been handed the ultimate encouragement by the player himself.

Sky Sports News reports that Hjerto-Dahl strongly prefers a move to Ibrox over Cardiff City or Besiktas.

The physical, technically gifted midfielder is eager to test himself in European competitions under the Ibrox lights and has made it known that Glasgow is his favoured destination.

With Cardiff’s opening bid out of the way and the player’s heart set on a move to Scotland, the ball is firmly in Rangers’ court to match the revised £6.8m valuation and seal a major coup for their midfield.
