Rumours that Rangers first-team coach Harry Watling could be about to take over the Rangers B team have been quashed following a painful defeat to Celtic.
According to the Rangers Review, any suggestion that Harry Watling – who joined Rangers when Michael Beale returned to the club – could be about to replace David McCallum are wide of the mark.
This comes after the Rangers B side stumbled to a 4-3 penalty kicks defeat after a 3-3 draw in the Glasgow Cup Final against Celtic at Ibrox, with the microscope shining on even the youth set-up after a disappointing season.
The Rangers Review story comes after rumours spread that Harry Watling could be about to replace David McCallum as the B team’s head coach following a poor campaign.
These appear to have originated from Football Insider, who claimed that Harry Watling would take the Rangers B team reins at the end of the season.
The young Gers battled back bravely from 3-0 down against their Celtic rivals in the City of Glasgow Cup Final; the Ibrox side’s second string forcing extra-time following a late rally.
A Zak Lovelace goal either side of a Tony Weston double helped force the game to spot kicks but, unfortunately, the Rangers youths suffered heartbreak against their Old Firm rivals on the day.
David McCallum faces press despite Harry Watling Rangers B rumours
Despite rumours that he could be replaced, with the Rangers B team finishing second in the Lowland League behind Spartans, David McCallum spoke to the press after the defeat to Celtic.
The Ibrox youth coach described the result as “incredibly sore” and made mention of an “11-minute power cut” in the side which almost cost them the game.
“Incredibly sore, ultimately we had an 11 minute powercut in the first half that gave us a mountain to climb. We get goals back and had numerous chances to win the game in normal time,” said McCallum.
“We have lost a cup final in our stadium. It will hurt the boys right now but they know where the game is won and lost. I am so pleased with the reaction at half-time but I am so disappointed we didn’t win it in normal time.
“One or two moments we were a bit late to where the press needed to happen. We have failed in this moment tonight and the goals conceded are a frustration, but that’s not all down to defenders.”
