Rangers fans have responded on social media after it was confirmed on Monday that Glenn Middleton has joined St Johnstone on loan until the end of the season [Official Rangers FC Twitter].

The 21-year-old former Norwich academy star played a big part in Steven Gerrard’s first season at Ibrox, turning out 28 times in all competitions on the left wing.

He showed signs of real promise, scoring five times and notching five assists, but he’s barely featured since.

Middleton had unsuccessful loan spells at Hibernian and Bradford City last season and spent the majority of the first half of the current campaign with the Gers B team, only making one first-team appearance off the bench at left-back in a League Cup tie at Falkirk in November.

He now has a chance to prove himself in the Premiership, though, at St Johnstone.

The pacy Scotland U21 international will wear the number 16 shirt and he could make his debut at McDiarmid Park on Wednesday night against Aberdeen.

St Johnstone are unbeaten in five matches in all competitions, but they are ninth in the league table and are averaging less than a goal a game in the Premiership so far this season.

Therefore, Callum Davidson will hope that Middleton will be able to provide an attacking spark from wide areas.

Plenty of Rangers fans are delighted that regular playing time finally beckons for the young prospect and he’s being tipped to play a big role in Perth over the next few months.
