Rangers fans have reacted on Twitter after Greg Docherty officially returned to Rangers following a loan spell at Hibernian.

The 23-year-old struggled for opportunities at Ibrox over the first half of the 2019/20 campaign, prompting a January move.

After speculation about a move to England came to nothing, he signed a loan deal with Hibs until the end of the season.

Just as he had done in EFL League One with Shrewsbury Town the previous season, Docherty hit the ground running with his adopted side.

Given license to create from midfield under Jack Ross, he registered five assists in eight appearances and scored three times, whilst also picking up a number of Man of the Match awards.

However, his progress was cut short by the global health crisis.

Hibernian’s campaign was halted in mid-March, so as it turned out, the Gers loanee’s last outing for the Hibees was in a 3-1 defeat at Aberdeen.

On Monday morning, the Edinburgh club confirmed Docherty and three other players had returned to their parent clubs following the decision to formally end the Premiership season.

Docherty then took to social media later in the day to bid his own farewell.

“Thank you to everyone @HibernianFC for the opportunity and experience during my time at the club,” he wrote on Twitter. “It was a brilliant dressing room to be part of! All the best in the future.”

The tweet prompted a lot of responses, with plenty of Hibs fans thanking him for his contributions and imploring him to return on a permanent deal.

It seems some Rangers fans still think he could have a role to play across 2020/21 at Ibrox, though, despite Steven Gerrard’s previous reluctance to give him opportunities.

Docherty’s Rangers contract runs until the summer of 2022.
