Rangers expected to make transfer move for £5m rated Kevin Boma who could replace ‘brick wall’

Despite having nobody in charge on a permanent basis, Rangers are continuing the preparations for next season knowing that there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

There are three key areas of concern in the Rangers squad, but too many points have been dropped due to problems with the defence.

A lack of consistency has seen over 15 different combinations at the back, the biggest indication that Rangers need to recruit robust and reliable centre-halves.

Having signed Rafael Fernandes in January, it looks like Rangers are re-setting their sights on another Primeira Liga prospect.

According to Foot Mercato, Rangers are expected to make an offer for £5m rated Kevin Boma, Estoril’s towering stopper who they only signed from Rodez last summer.

Rangers could be set to make £5m offer for Kevin Boma

Standing at 6ft 4inches tall, the Togo international is also being considered by both Union Berlin and Basel.

It would be a statement of intent should Rangers dig deep for a player like Boma, but this season has shown how important having a dominant centre-half is, especially domestically.

The gap to Celtic is already big enough, so Nils Koppen and Kevin Thelwell have to get this one right.

Who could make way to sign Boma?

What is encouraging is that Birmingham City seem intent on signing both Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell.

Davies, branded a brick wall, has proven that he is a good defender having signed for Rangers with a solid reputation in England.

That reputation has been restored.

Rangers might not get the full £4m that was paid to Liverpool, however, there is no reason why most of the £5m fee that Estoril are looking for Boma can be covered.

It is how the player trading model should work; one in, one out, but with a player coming in who could be developed and sold at a profit.

Rangers have missed a defender like Filip Helander since the big Swede’s injury problems saw him struggle for fitness and Boma could well be the perfect replacement to handle both the physicality of the SPFL and pace of continental football.
