Rangers exit regret sees summer departure no better off

When Alfredo Morelos left Rangers, the general consensus was that a team in Europe would be able to afford the sort of salary that he was looking for.

This made his move to Santos even stranger, especially given as the Colombian missed the whole of pre-season and joined after the transfer window shut.

According to Brazilian outfit Ofutebolero, Alfredo Morelos is earning a decent wage in Serie A but not quite as much as some would have expected after leaving Rangers.

Michael Beale revealed that talks with El Bufalo and Ryan Kent never got as far as that and no contracts were ever put in front of the pair.

A number would have been discussed at some point though and there were rumours of a £45,000 per week demand from Alfredo Morelos, a wage Rangers were never going to pay.

Certainly not for a player who had been in his form and his condition.

The report claims that Morelos is earning £138,000 a month, which actually comes out at only slightly more than the £33,000 Salary Sport claims he was on at Rangers last season.

What is surprising, is that Santos’s star striker Marcos Leonardo, who Morelos is having to play second fiddle to, is “only” on around £8,500 per week.

He looks in decent shape now and it may be that not getting the offers in terms of prestige or money that he thought he would get has served as a wake-up call.

It will be interesting to ask him, when his playing days are done, if he has any regrets about how he conducted himself in the last 12 months.

Well paid he might be, but Alfredo Morelos must be missing the Europa League nights with Rangers rather than sitting on the bench watching a relegation battle.
