Rangers are in the market to sign another centre-back to replace Nasser Djiga, despite Ben Godfrey’s arrival.

Godfrey has been brought in for his versatility as he cannot just play centrally, but is capable of doing well as a right-back as well as a left-back.

Derek McInnes does want to bring in someone who’s capable of partnering Emmanuel Fernandez on a regular basis in the heart of the defence.

Rangers are keen on Troyes defender Sankhoun Diawara

Rangers have entered the race to bring Troyes defender Sankhoun Diawara to Ibrox, according to Foot Mercato.

Despite the French club securing promotion to Ligue 1, the 20-year-old could be parting ways with them this summer.

FC Basel have been keen on the French defender for a while, and are said to be making significant progress towards securing his services.

How will you remember Jack Butland for his time as the Rangers number one?

They are now battling the Gers for Diawara, as the Glasgow outfit are monitoring the situation as well.

Reports suggest that he is valued at around 1.7m by Troyes and he is keen on taking the step up in this transfer window.

The Paris-born centre-back has been at Troyes since 2020, first representing their youth teams, having made his senior debut in November 2024 as an 18-year-old.

How Diawara can be Nasser Djiga’s replacement

Much like Djiga, Diawara is an athletic centre-back who is known for his aggression and reach.

At 20, he may not be the finished article, but this is still an investment worth making, as he is not too expensive but has a major upside.

What is important is that he is left-footed and his presence will give them much-needed balance on the side.

Diawara’s recovery pace is also commendable, which makes it possible for McInnes to deploy a high line at Rangers next season.

He may start as a squad player, if the Gers are to sign a more established centre-back or if Godfrey becomes the first choice, but he could make that position his own in no time should he develop in the right way.

It remains to be seen if the Light Blues follow up their interest with an official bid.
