Rangers are interested in signing Dimitrios Kourbelis with the Panathinaikos man understood to be on the Ibrox radar for this summer.

That’s according to reports over in Greece as SDNA note that both Celtic and Rangers are interested in signing Kourbelis.

Kourbelis is out of contract at the end of the season and it’s suggested that the Old Firm duo are aware of a potential bargain.

It is though suggested that Kourbelis is in advanced talks to extend his contract with Panathinaikos.

This has the feel of Rangers and Celtic being used as leverage to try and get that deal with Panathinaikos over the line – possibly for some lucrative wages.

Back in 2018, SDNA reported that Rangers were interested in signing AEK Athens defender Vasilios Lambropoulos, which ultimately amounted to nothing.

Links to Kourbelis feel similarly unlikely but maybe the Panathinaikos star has put himself on Michael Beale’s radar.

Who is Rangers-linked Dimitrios Kourbelis?

Kourbelis came through the ranks with Asteras Tripolis and ended up making more than 130 first-team appearances for the club.

Panathinaikos pounced to sign Kourbelis in January 2017 and he has continued to rack up the games.

Now with eight goals and nine assists in 163 games for Panathinaikos, Kourbelis has been an outstanding signing.

Captain since 2017, Kourbelis is the heart and soul of the Panathinaikos team – and an exit seems unlikely for that reason.

Kourbelis also has 30 caps for Greece having impressed over the years.

A former defender, Kourbelis is mostly known as a holding midfielder but the Greek press have praised him for his ability as a box-to-box player too.

Kourbelis is a hard-working, versatile player with great leadership ability, so a free transfer may well appeal.

Now 29 though, Kourbelis isn’t really one with the future in mind and we can’t see him turning up at Ibrox this summer.
