Rangers have been dealt a potential transfer blow after a Daily Record report claimed that Gers-linked Hearts star John Souttar sees his future in England.
Rangers were credited with interest in Souttar as recently as last week [Daily Mail [17/11/21, print edition p.78]], and then earlier this week, the Scottish Sun reported that he was free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with other clubs from 1 December.
Robbie Neilson has also suggested that if the 25-year-old centre-back didn’t agree to a contract extension soon, Hearts would be open to selling him in January to avoid losing him for free in the summer.
However, the Daily Record now claims that Souttar is set to disappoint both Rangers and Celtic by seeking a move to England.
EFL Championship sides Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers, Millwall, Middlesbrough, Luton Town, Queen’s Park Rangers, Birmingham City, Blackpool and Preston are all then credited with interest.
Rangers blow as Ibrox-linked Hearts star reportedly looks to England
It would be no big surprise if the reported Rangers interest in Souttar is genuine, given his strong performances for both Hearts and Scotland so far this season.
However, it appears that if Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to strengthen at the back either in January or in the summer, he’ll have to look elsewhere.
GvB currently has Leon Balogun, the out-of-sorts Connor Goldson and Jack Simpson at his disposal, with Filip Helander still out injured.
Recalling Niko Katic from Hajduk Split in January is an option, but the loanee had a shocker in his most recent outing.
