Rangers dealt apparent big blow in pursuit of in-demand midfielder - report

Rangers appear to have been dealt a big blow in their pursuit of Salih Ozcan, with Glasgow Live reporting via Kicker that the in-demand midfielder has agreed a new deal at FC Koln.

The Gers were credited with interest in the Germany youth international last summer [Kölner Stadt Anzeiger] and a fresh link emerged earlier this month [Kicker].

It’s been claimed that the Gers have been considering swooping for Ozcan on a free transfer, particularly if current assets were to move elsewhere.

However, it now looks as though there’s next to no chance of the Euro U21 Championship winner heading to Ibrox this summer.

That’s because Glasgow Live reports via Kicker that he’s agreed a new contract in principle at Koln.

It was previous manager Markus Gisdol who had allowed Ozcan’s contract to run down but Steffen Baumgart made it clear when he took over in May that he wanted the reported Gers target to stay on and he now appears to have got his wish.

The deal hasn’t been officially confirmed yet by Koln and contract extensions don’t always guarantee that a player is staying put.

For example, Bongani Zungu signed an extension at Amiens last summer before joining the Gers on loan.

However, it would be a surprise if a similar loan-to-buy type deal was on the cards here given how highly Baumgart rates Ozcan and the Gers may now have to look elsewhere if they are to strengthen in midfield.

One potential option is a composed operator who has experience of winning trophies and could be available for £1m.
