Yanis Bensaber has mentioned his trial at Rangers in an interview with Le Dauphine.

The 19-year-old winger who featured for France at U16 level was named in a Gers XI against Corby Town back in May.

Donning no.11, he scored in a 3-3 draw, but no more was ever heard of him.

“Finally, it did not happen,” Bensaber told Le Dauphine about his attempts to win a Rangers deal. “I was still under contract with Lille, it was complicated.”

Since then, the youngster has left Lille and moved to Amateur football with Annecy in National League 2.

It seems something of a step-down, but his new coach, Michael Poinsignon, is delighted with the signing.

“He will bring his percussion, his ability to eliminate,” he told Le Dauphine. “But he’s only 19, so do not put pressure on him. He has everything to prove.”

“He is a little behind physically, but he can already be a wildcard for us.”

Verdict

It’s interesting that the Gers were even looking at a player who just a few months later has ended up in French football’s fourth tier.

Yet, if his Poinsignon’s comments are to be taken at face value, Bensaber is something of a mercurial talent.

The player’s comments don’t really clear up the reason behind the lack of a move to Ibrox, but if the ‘complications’ were around a continuing contract with his former club, the recruitment team clearly decided that he wasn’t worth forking out a fee for.

The Gers brought in Ryan Kent, Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker and Jake Hastie over the course of the summer, so the club isn’t exactly short on wide players right now, anyway.
