Good defensive midfielders are hard to find so, when one like Jean-Philippe Gbamin is available on a free transfer, Rangers should be enquiring.

Why is a 17-cap Ivory Coast international whose last move was a reported £25m available now, for nothing, at just 27-years old though?

Having had his contract cancelled by Everton Jean-Phillippe Gbamin is the perfect example of a player who endured horrific luck but Rangers could be the club that cashes in.

Injury is the short answer.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin could be Rangers midfield solution

Last season on loan at Trabzonspor from Everton, Gbamin missed 14 games with minor issues, however, it is his time at the Toffees that makes John Souttar and Ryan Jack look like every presents.

Over 100 games were missed, according to Transfermarkt, between signing in August 2019 and June 2021.

A hamstring issue followed by an Achilles tendon rupture then a medial collateral knee ligament injury.

I don’t know if it’s a good thing that he hasn’t just been bothered by the same problem or a bad one because he has had long term problems with different body parts.

His quality is not in question with Rafa Benitez said to be keen on taking Gbamin to Celta Vigo.

It’s one area that we have been lacking since the decline and injury of Steven Davis – who could incredibly still sign a new contract – and Jean-Phillipe Gbamin could be the answer for Rangers, especially in European games and Old Firm derbies.

He wouldn’t have to play every game but would be an upgrade on the likes of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram who are both out of contract at the end of the season.

Jean-Phillipe Gbamin could be a real bargain for Rangers on a short-term deal.

Either that, or somebody for the medical staff to look after now that Souttar and Jack are fit.
