Rangers-linked Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson has been the subject of £2m interest from Serie A – just as he’s branded ‘Ibrox captain material’.
The son of ex-Ibrox midfielder Derek and nephew of former Gers captain Barry, barely a summer goes by where the Scotland international isn’t linked to Rangers.
But this time there’s been little sound around Rangers, Lewis Ferguson and a switch form the northeast as the player seemingly prepares to leave Pittodrie once and for all.
It’s hard to believe that Lewis Ferguson is still only 22 and we discussed links to four European clubs spread across two countries on this very blog only yesterday.
Now, according to the Scottish Sun, Serie A Lecce have only gone and made the links official with a £2m bid as another two Italian sides watch on with interest.
Signing Scottish youngsters is very much in vogue in Italy of course, with Liam Henderson now at Empoli and Aaron Hickey with Bologna.
This comes after a proposed move to English Championship Millwall collapsed and the transfer fee involved will have plenty of Rangers fans turning their heads.
It’s a fair price but it remains to be seen if Aberdeen would ever consider dealing with Rangers at it, especially given the bad blood that exists between the teams.
Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson branded ‘Rangers captain material’
Having already made a rather incredible 167 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring 37 goals and laying on 23 assists, Rangers could certainly do worse.
That’s a view also echoed by ex-Hamilton chairman Ronnie MacDonald, who cannot believe the Ibrox side haven’t plunged for his former Academical, who he believes is Ibrox captain material.
“The minute Lewis went to Aberdeen, he went straight into their first team and scored with an overhead kick against Burnley in the Europa League,” said MacDonald [Scottish Sun].
“It made a mockery of the valuation they’d originally put on him.
“With the benefit of hindsight, we made a mistake in him moving to Aberdeen, as they flogged him to death.
“He was their midfield enforcer when he’d just turned 19 years of age. If there was a hole in their team, he was the one they’d look for to fill it.
“But he’s a terrific lad with a great attitude and he’d have done it without questioning it. As a person and a player, Lewis is a diamond
“He’s captaincy material and, when I look at him, he looks like a Rangers player and captain-type to me.
“Considering his family background, I can’t understand why there hasn’t been interest from them in him.
“But if he’s going to go to Italy, the best of luck to him.”
