Rangers will get the chance to exact revenge over ex-Celtic striker and Lyon forward Moussa Dembele after reported links to West Ham failed to materialise on deadline day.
Dembele was reportedly a late transfer target for the Hammers and was linked to the club by West Ham fan media Knees Up Mother Brown.
However, for whatever reason the move never came to fruition and Dembele will now be part of the Lyon squad set to visit Ibrox in the Europa League later this month,
The Gers have drawn the Ligue 1 outfit alongside Czech club Sparta Prague and Danish Champions Brondby in Group A of the competition with Lyon set to visit Ibrox for the opener on 16th September.
The big French striker, now 25, scored the first Celtic hattrick against Rangers since 1973 when he netted a trio against a very poor Ibrox side in an infamous 5-1 demolition back in 2016.
Dembele would spend two years at Parkhead before moving to Lyon in a reported £19.7m deal and since then the forward has made a name for himself on loan goading Rangers fans.
The striker retains a close relationship with the Parkhead faithful and it adds an extra dimension to the clash which is sure to capture the attention of fans across the Scottish game.
For Steven Gerrard and co this will be a subplot best ignored but for the Rangers fans at Ibrox that night we expect Dembele might not be the most popular player on the pitch.
It’s not the first time Moussa’s big mouth has came back to haunt him either as Rangers comfortably beat his Lyon side 2-0 in the pre-season Veolia tournament at the beginning of last season.
Meanwhile, some Gers fans have been left scratching their heads over praise of Celtic’s £40m downsizing as the Ibrox club are criticised by some for retaining their best talent.
