Calvin Bassey tipped as ‘perfect’ for Everton after £23m Rangers exit

Rangers raked in the cash for Calvin Bassey last summer but the defender is already being tipped to leave Ajax.

Ross Wilson is rightfully receiving criticism for his transfer record at Ibrox.

Too much money spend on limited quality means Rangers haven’t managed to improve their starting XI enough since winning the title.

Wilson is under fire but if he could point to one big success story, it would be defender Bassey.

Snapped up from Leicester City for just £230,000 in compensation according to The Daily Record, Rangers took a chance on Bassey and the gamble paid off.

Bassey developed into a quality centre back under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and was colossal during Rangers’ run to the Europa League final.

Ajax ended up paying around £23million for Bassey, giving Rangers enormous profit on the Nigerian centre back.

Calvin Bassey already tipped to leave Ajax

Rangers fans saw the best of Bassey but Ajax supporters may be left wondering what all the fuss was about.

Bassey has blown hot and cold for Ajax but has managed to rack up 33 appearances in all competitions.

The 23-year-old has only lost two league games as an Ajax player and helped the Amsterdam giants claim a clean sheet against NEC Nijmegen at the weekend.

Still, pundits in the Netherlands don’t seem entirely convinced.

Reporter Pieter Zwart has been quoted by Ajax Showtime as saying that Bassey isn’t great at defending his own box and isn’t impressive in the air either.

Zwart added that he is still doubtful of Bassey becoming an Ajax star and thinks he would be ‘perfect’ for a club like Everton.

Zwart urged Ajax to ‘grab money’ for Bassey if possible, talking up the prospect of him leaving Amsterdam having only moved from Ibrox last year.

Rangers will be watching Bassey’s situation closely as they surely have a sell-on clause as part of the deal.
